The Story Behind The Story

The death of a young athlete due to an undetected heart condition is leading to changes that will save lives. Justin Carr, a young student athlete at Harvard-Westlake, died during a swimming workout. His autopsy revealed that he, unknowingly, suffered from cardiomyopathy, which is a weakening of the heart muscle, increasing the risk of cardiac arrest.

Inspired by what happened to Justin Carr, through UCLA’s medical outreach center in Thousand Oaks, the kids who play sports at Oaks Christian School went through sports physicals that included screenings by a cardiologist. Suraya Fadel Reporting
